Technik, die begeistert !
After our first short report, which was made directly after this year’s CeBit, we now have one of the first serial models of the new Razer (special thanks to Robert Krakoff and Klaus Mähleke). This review reflects 2 premieres: 1. the Boomslang 2500 is the first new product from Razer and 2. this is our first review on Blueprints! When my package arrived I (DarkPeanut) was scared of how the German Post AG treated my package but luckily the mouse inside of it was without any harm.
From what we know the Boomslang 2500 was replaced by the 2100 which should be released, bundled with a Speedpad and a 24 months warranty in Europe. Perhaps TerraTec will provide a few glide feet as a reserve in the package, because they have worn out very fast in the past. At the moment it is still unclear when it will be released in America and Asia and if TerraTec distributes the Boomslang there, too. The trade-in-programme should follow a few months after the release. The introduction of the new mouse was originally set for the end of April, but it is obviously delayed. Nevertheless, we have a first report about technical features and game feeling.Techtalk
Apart from the new colour scheme (completely black), there does not seem to be a big difference between the new 2.5k and the old 2k version. Form and scales remain the same. The new developments are inside the Razer. The opening of the casing is to be done in the same way as Razer 2k (see tutorial). Unfortunately, the front screws are placed under the pads again, which are damaged during opening then.
The pads are also black and, according to Razer Inc., they consist of a more glideable material (the touch test confirms this). But the glue of the pads loses its stickiness when you take them off and it is a tricky procedure to replace them. Hopefully the new mouse comes with some additional pads. Our suggestion: do not put the screws back in their holes, but fix the original pads with glue or glide tapes instead.

The inside of the new Razer 2.5k is different from the old model in that it is very tidy. The cable duct is much better and more than 15 different electric components have been reduced to three resistors, two condensors and one encoding chip. The usual Omron D2F micro switches have been replaced by DM1 parts from IC, which have a softer pressure point and a better click feeling. The side microchips are fixed with screws instead of stacking to the circuit board, so it should be easier to change the switches if necessary. The circuit board itself has two separate screws on the optical axies of the mouse’s head. The USB cable also has a screw connection, which is separate on the circuit board. The mouse wheel plug has been moved further away from the edge of the circuit board. The wheel itself moves easier than the one of the previous mouse model (although it was possible to adjust it – see tutorial). The biggest and possibly most important change is in the construction and order of the optical scanning units and the axies in the back of the Razer. While the old wheels were big and wide the new ones are slim and fragile. Sender and responder of the encoder are no longer opposed to each other, but in a right angle order on top of a special unit. The optical wheels’ amount of crosswise shafts has been increased, the width of them has been decreased. Together with an adjusted photo sensor unit they provide a higher precision. The question remains if due to the new design, higher scan rates are possible in the future.

According to the manufacturer the new shafts are now made of hardened steel ( although we cannot prove it
) and are very similar to the original construction of the first edition Razers. Instead of a white polymer cover over the whole length, there is now only a 5mm small black polymer ring around the shaft. The shafts are borne within two greased polymere glide bearings. Supposedly, the cleaning of the new Razer will be reduced to these glide bearings (also relubricate them) and the polymer ring. We realized during testing that there wasn’t as much dust and dirt on the new black rings around the shaft as on the old white rings of the 2k. The construction of the crosswise wheel which pushes the mouse ball against the two shafts has not been changed, although compared to the 2000 model of the third series, stronger springs have been chosen.

The weight of the ball was reduced from 25 to 5 grams (for comparison: Logitech Wingman Ball: 20g; our lightest ball: 2g). We don’t know what the reason is right now. Possibly one reason is that the lighter ball will have better traction with your mousepad during fast movements and flicks. Who doesn’t like this can change the ball with the one out of their old Boomslang (the diameter hasn’t changed from 22mm).
The whole mouse has now a weight of 115g for comparison: the old 2000: 150g.
The materials used have also been changed. The stroke resistant polymer ABS which has already been used for the casing is now also used for the buttons (instead of the softer Polypophen –PP). As the solid cable of the old Razer 2000 annoyed many users, the new Razer has a softer cable. The new cable is pleasantly flexible and pliable.
Altogether, the new inner order of the Razer 2500 makes a very good impression. You can disassemble the new 2.5k completely, as the important parts are not glued in, but are plugged in or screwed in. Even though the casings of the 2.5k and the 2k seem to be identical, you cannot interchange the different parts without problems. Maybe the differences can be leveled out with the help of some changes so that the old translucent upper casing (for LED mods) can be used with the 2.5k. If this is possible, we will publish a tutorial.
Game feeling
As a Razer user you are already used to the high sensitivity of the mouse and while using it for the first time the new Razer 2.5k feels like a real Razer: soft as butter! If you have got the right mouse pad you can literally click on every pixel. The movements of your hand are transmitted precisely and the soft pressure point of the micro switches makes precise clicks possible. In a direct test against the old 2k with Counter Strike (Podbot) and Quake III Arena the new rodent is more manuverable and precise. The over 200 technical improvements inside seem to be worth it.
The installation was quite easy. You unplug your old BS 1000/2000 and simply plug in your new Boomslang 2500. We hadn’t had to reinstall the XP-drivers, because you can still use them without problems. Because the new cord is much thinner and more flexible, you don’t have any problems with the cord anymore when it gets stuck or caught on anything.
Through the higher DPI of 2500, the sensitivity has been increased on the maximum level (10) feelable. You can start either with a lower sensitivity at the beginning and put it in steps higher, or you can use the full sensitivity at once. We risked to put it at full sensitivity from the beginning and we had to take a little time to get used to it. The aiming was noticeably easier because of the improvment of the precision and the lighter weight. After a little training you will be able to shoot your enemys much more accurately.
The new plastic mixture of the buttons is very pleasant and you have a much more stable and nonslipable hold. The clickpoint is much easier and more pleasing as you feel like you have much more control over your clicking. The mousewheel is also more responsive and more precise. You don’t have to worry though that when you use it as button 3 that you will scroll accidently and change your weapons.
The axies seem, like we’ve mentioned before, more stable and harder, thus providing a perfect translation of mouse movement. They don’t get that dirty, fast, like the axies of the old 1000/2000 Boomslangs in the earlier days as they move much easier because they’re oiled very well. Every little movement is recognized – pure precision. Through the lighter weight of the mouse and the mouseball, one can make out how much faster movements and flicks are than before with the old Boomslangs. The older Boomslangs were known by most as sniper weapons and were inferior to other lighter mice in close combat. Now you don’t have any problems and disatvantages anymore, because you can react precisely and win in close combat more often.
In drawing programmes, like Photoshop for example, you can draw pixel by pixel now even more precisly than before. This is due to the higher DPI which makes this mouse a great product for artists or gfx-fetishists too. Mapping and modelling is very easy as well, and goes very well from the hand with a little training. CAD-Users should consider buying this mouse as well.
Like we mentioned before we, of course, tested the mouse in games…because, well, it’s a gamer’s mouse
. The Testgames were: Q3A, CS, DoD, UT, UT2k3, and EF. Well what else can you write besides that you can play with it wonderfully? I think much! The Testgames are very different from each other in terms of gameplay. Q3a, EF, and the UTs are very fast games where you have to react very quickly and aim very fast. You play them mostly in close combat. DoD and CS are very different from this, because they’re based a lot on tactics and you often have to hide yourself, wait and 『camp』 with a long range weapon for an enemy. You have much more time for this than in Q3a, because it is very hectic and fast. In both cases you need a very precise mouse, which should have many assignable buttons, which should be easily clickable too. The scrollwheel is often an important factor for weapon changing as well. The Boomslang 2500 provides all these features.
First DoD and CS. You can lay very comfortable at the descibed 『camping』 position and wait for an enemy. Because there aren’t any pixel jumps, you can follow them smoothly and shoot you target with a high probability.
In Q3a, EF, and the UTs, everything is very fast and you don’t really have time to wait and aim at your enemies. You’re mostly in close combat and therefore it is important that you move your mouse very easily and aim at them quickly. The Boomslang is perfect for this situation.
All in all, the Boomslang is very nice for every game out there! Even in strategy games where some people have an advantage, because they can assign and control their units much faster and more accurately than with a standard mouse.
We’ll update our pad test later on. We’ll be testing the Boomslang 2500 with all pads and will add a few new ones too. We will also test the different glidetapes and test if the silicon sprays are really worth their money.
Summary
We won’t give any % or point rates, because we can recommend the new Boomslang 2500 to absolutely everyone! You have to think about buying this mouse if you own an old 2000 model, but everyone has to decide for themselves. New users have to know that they will have to get used to the new form of the mouse much like they had to get used to a 1000/2000 model. The last thing is that this mouse is absolutely genious and that Razer made a really great comeback from the ashes. If they make it further than this, they will become a great competitor to the other mouse producers. Ok, get up and pre-order it if you haven’t done this already!

Comment: We know now that the Boomslang 2500 won’t be released or will come later. It was replaced by the 2100 which is complete identically to the 2500 only with 400 DPI less. We’ll release a Review about the 2.1k when all faults of it are solved.
